Romynox is pleased to announce a technical partnership with Utah Medical Products, Inc. (UTMD), ensuring the continued supply of the original single-use pressure sensor technology trusted by many users in bioprocessing. These sensors have long been recognized for reliable single-use pressure measurement in biopharmaceutical processing. What many users may not realize is that the original sensor design and manufacturing expertise have always been rooted at Utah Medical Products. Following recent industry changes, Utah Medical is now supplying these established sensors directly via Romynox to help guarantee product continuity for existing and new users. In this blog, we introduce Utah Medical, explain our partnership, and explore the technical advantages of these pressure sensors for all (bio)pharma users looking for a proven single-use pressure measurement solution.

Utah Medical Products – Expertise Behind the Sensors

Utah Medical Products, Inc. has been a pioneer in pressure sensing technology since 1985, originally developing disposable blood pressure sensors for medical use. Building on this expertise, UTMD engineered the high pressure single-use sensor that became a trusted standard in biopharmaceutical processing for nearly two decades. The sensor’s proven reliability is rooted in Utah Medical’s engineering knowledge and ISO 13485 certified manufacturing. Today, Utah Medical supplies the same established sensor directly under its own name, available through Romynox. This longstanding expertise ensures continuity, quality, and trusted performance for demanding bioprocessing applications.

Technical Advantages of UTMD’s Pressure Sensors

Beyond continuity, an important aspect of this announcement is that users retain the technical benefits that made these original Utah Medical pressure sensors a trusted choice in bioprocessing. These single-use pressure sensors deliver high performance in critical applications by providing accurate and repeatable pressure measurements, supported by Utah Medical’s rigorous manufacturing and testing process. During production, every sensor is 100% calibration-tested before shipment and supplied with a Certificate of Compliance verifying its calibration and quality. NIST-traceable individual calibration certificates are also available on request for users who require detailed documentation. The sensors are manufactured under an ISO 13485 certified quality system and in ISO Class 7 cleanroom conditions, supporting a controlled process and consistent unit-to-unit performance.

From a material perspective, the sensor housings are made from durable, biocompatible polymers, including medical grade polycarbonate or polysulfone, that have been extensively tested for biopharmaceutical use. Utah Medical has certified the materials against commonly required standards, including USP Class VI biocompatibility, extractables and leachables profiles, cytotoxicity, pyrogenicity through LAL testing, and particulate requirements. The sensors are also rated for long shelf life, with 5 year storage stability without performance degradation. They are compatible with gamma irradiation. Depending on the application, they are typically supplied pre sterilized or can be purchased sterile. In practical terms, these qualifications allow the sensors to be used with confidence in validated GMP processes, supported by a robust quality dossier.

From a performance standpoint, UTMD’s single-use sensors offer the convenience of disposable technology with the accuracy and durability expected from traditional stainless steel transducers. They have proven to be a dependable alternative to heavy steel pressure gauges, helping eliminate cleaning requirements and reduce cross contamination risks while maintaining precise pressure measurement. The sensor response is suitable for both static and dynamic pressure monitoring of gases and liquids, making them versatile across a wide range of process monitoring needs. Each sensor is delivered pre calibrated and ready to use, supporting straightforward, plug and play implementation. Because the design has remained consistent for many years, users have built extensive process experience and datasets around these sensors, with proven low drift and reliable readings in real world operation. Together, these factors contribute to a pressure sensor solution that meets the stringent demands of biopharmaceutical manufacturing while remaining easy to deploy in single-use workflows.
